What brings women to MLH?

Abuse transcends culture, gender and socio-economic background. The women who utilize the Margaret Laurence House Programs come to us from a variety of situations. Some of the situations that have brought women to Margaret Laurence House in the past include:

  • fleeing from other communities, cities or countries to maintain their safety from their partner
  • financial abuse
  • sexual abuse
  • abuse of children
  • emotional and psychological abuse
  • physical abuse
  • fear of the use of weapons
  • abuse of pets
  • destruction of property
  • isolation from family members, friends, supports, or religious communities
  • a sponsorship breakdown after arriving in Canada
